WOOD Oliver Jubilee  NEW

Compiled by Gordon Freegard based on research by Stephen Newbey

Edith "Edie" Richards, my great-grandmother, married Oliver "Ollie" Jubilee Wood on 11th July 1907 in a double wedding at "Xmas Farm" Clear Hills (Gnowangerup did not exist then) with her sister, Ethel.

Edith was born on 17th April 1887 at Horsham, Victoria.

Oliver's father, John Wood, came over to W.A. for the wedding as Ollie was not 21 and his permission was needed for the marriage. John liked the land around Gnowangerup, went back to S.A. sold up and took up "Woodlands" just east of what is now Gnownagwerup, But that is another story.

Ollie & Edie started married life on their first farm called "Peach Farm" where the Gnowangerup Aerodrome is now located. "Peach Farm" because of the Quandong trees growing on the property.

Ollie then purchased a better farm at Kebaringup which he sold to J. Fennell in 1924.

In 1924 he purchased a 1,844 acre farm “Woodlands” nearer Gnowangerup, from his father, but didn’t realise that the Agricultural Bank had a large mortgage on it, so he sold it in 1926 and moved to a poorer farm “Strathearn” he purchased from Douglas Archer at Kwobrup in 1926.

Edie died on 22nd June 1929 at Gnowangerup and was buried at the Gnowangerup Cemetery on 24th June 1929 with her newborn son Harace.
